Who is Mosaic? How long has Mosaic been in Louisiana?

The Mosaic Company is the world’s leading integrated producer of concentrated phosphate and potash — two of the three most important nutrients in agriculture. For more than 50 years, Mosaic’s Louisiana employees have worked hard to help the world grow the food it needs. Our Louisiana phosphate business employs over 500 employees and contractors and operates two manufacturing facilities in St. James Parish to serve farmers here at home and abroad.

What do MosaicΓÇÖs Louisiana facilities produce?

Up to 60% of a farmer’s yield is dependent on crop nutrition. Mosaic’s Louisiana facilities produce performance fertilizer designed to provide advanced crop nutrition. Performance products, like MicroEssentials®, ensure not just the right balance of nutrients, but the right material consistency to give growers an efficient application experience and optimum nutrient distribution for increased yields. Mosaic’s commodity phosphate products are created by reacting ammonia and phosphoric acid to produce a solid, granulated fertilizer. Mosaic Monoammonium Phosphate (MAP) and Diammonium Phosphate (DAP) can be applied directly to the soil using conventional spreading equipment.

Phosphogypsum

What is phosphogypsum?

Phosphogypsum is a byproduct of the fertilizer manufacturing process. It is produced when the phosphate rock is combined with sulfuric acid to form phosphoric acid and phosphogypsum. The phosphogypsum must be filtered and removed so the remaining phosphoric acid can be used to make fertilizer. The phosophogypsum is subsequently deposited on a “gypstack” under strict standards established by the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ) and the U.S Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

What is a gypstack or phosphogypsum stack?

A gypstack refers to a stack where phosphogypsum is stored. Phosphogypsum (primarily calcium sulfate) is a byproduct of the fertilizer manufacturing process. Federal regulations require phosphogypsum to be stored in stacks because of naturally occurring properties in the mined phosphate rock. Gypstacks are engineered features and are highly regulated. LDEQ has stringent standards regarding the design, operation, maintenance, closure and long-term care of gypstacks.

Instead of disposing of phosphogypsum in stacks, canΓÇÖt the material be used for other purposes?

In 1989, EPA regulations required U.S. phosphate companies to store phosphogypsum in stacks because of slightly elevated radiation levels in the phosphogypsum. Trade organizations like the International Fertilizer Association (IFA)  monitor where and how phosphogypsum is being used internationally.

Environment

Does Mosaic monitor the air and water near its Louisiana facilities?

Mosaic has air monitors in and around both of our Louisiana facilities that are monitored regularly. We also monitor all water on-site. Any water leaving our site is monitored through a permitted outfall. Water discharges are highly regulated, and we manage compliance with limitations that protect the designated uses of the receiving water body. Discharges are monitored, sampled and analyzed regularly, with reports provided by Mosaic to regulatory agencies.

Do MosaicΓÇÖs operations impact local water supplies?

Water is an essential input in our operations and across the agricultural value chain. It is alsoa critical resource for society, including the communities and ecosystems in which we operate. As a company, we are managing this priority by reducing freshwater use in our operations as we work to maximize water recycling and reuse. We are committed to not only ensuring the quantity of water is sustainable, but also maintaining the quality of the water we use in the communities where we operate.

What is the emissions profile of MosaicΓÇÖs Louisiana facilities?

We use energy and generate greenhouse gas and other emissions in the production and distribution of our crop nutrient products. Air quality is an important issue for our business and for the communities around our operations. We are working to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions companywide, while also managing other emissions like sulfur dioxide, nitrous oxide and particulate matter.

Community

What economic impact does Mosaic have on the local economy and community?

For over 340 Mosaic phosphate employees in Louisiana, the communities where we operate also are our homes – where we live, work, play and raise our children. We want what everyone else wants – a good quality of life, clean air and water, and a robust economy that provides good jobs. Over $43M in local payroll is paid to employees and contractors every year. Mosaic also pays over $10 million in state and local annual taxes generated. These local taxes are used to support our community schools, fire and police departments, and other vital public services.
